St. Clement’s Church
|
St. Clement’s Church was founded in 1898 and is now celebrating 125 years of serving God in the Makiki community of Honolulu. The present building, built in 1942, has high ceilings and sliding side doors that are usually wide open to allow the flow of cooling breezes. Warm welcomes are extended to everyone, including the occasional well-behaved pet.
Each week on Thursday afternoons, church members host the Makiki Farmers Market, which draws a local crowd. You will find locally grown fruits and vegetables, hot foods, and the opportunity to “talk story” with a neighbor or a new friend. The Episcopal Church in Hawaii began in 1862 when King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma invited The Church of England to Hawaii more than 150 years ago. The king and queen supported the church’s establishment with gifts of land, resulting in thirty-five churches throughout the islands. They also founded a hospital, now known as The Queen’s Medical Center, St. Andrew’s Cathedral as well as two schools: ’Iolani School (co-ed) and St. Andrew’s Priory (for girls). We see these and other things as evidence of their compassion and concern for their people. |
